Yuri Namkung
Violinist Yuri Namkung was born in Seattle, Washington where she made early debut appearances with the Northwest Chamber Orchestra at the age of nine and was subsequently and twice invited to perform with the Seattle Symphony. In 2002, she made her European debut with the Zürich-Tonhalle Orchestra in Switzerland under the direction and invitation of David Zinman. In 2004 and 2005, she joined violinist Cho-Liang Lin in performances of the Bach Double Concerto with the Seattle Symphony and with the Orchestra of St.Luke’s at Alice Tully Hall in New York.
Festival appearances include La Jolla Chamber Music Society’s SummerFest, Music@Menlo, Ravinia Festival-Steans Institute, Verbier, Salzburg-Mozarteum Academy, Perlman Music Program, and Ottawa Chamber Music Festivals. A founding member of the Moët Trio, the group completed New England Conservatory’s Professional Piano Trio Training Program in 2009. Appearances include performances at the Kennedy Center, Jordan Hall, Gardner Museum, New School: Schneider Concert Series, Carnegie Hall’s Neighborhood Series, Virginia Arts Festival, Lawrence University, Dame Myra Hess Series in 2012 and extensive educational outreach through Astral Artistic Series in Philadelphia. The San Francisco Classical Voice described them as: “Separately and together, these are musicians you will want to hear repeatedly in coming years.”
Passionate about sharing music throughout the world, she began teaching at Music@Menlo in 2007 and received regular invitations to Venezuela beginning in 2008, most recently having traveled there with the Borromeo Quartet, Donald and Vivian Weilerstein, and Mark Churchill. In 2009, she was appointed Director of the Classical Music Department of the Panama Jazz Festival at the invitation and guidance of jazz pianist and Unicef Ambassador Danilo Perez. In 2010, Yuri was appointed Instructor of Violin at the Interlochen Arts Academy.
Yuri attended Juilliard Pre-College where she studied with Dorothy DeLay and Won Bin Yim from 1996-2001. She graduated from Columbia University with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and as a participant of Columbia’s Joint Program with the Juilliard School, received her Master of Music from Juilliard where she studied with Cho-Liang Lin and Donald Weilerstein. She studied with Donald Weilerstein and Miriam Fried at the New England Conservatory, completing her studies with a Graduate Diploma in Chamber Music.
